Leave some room on the pages for putting various additional information, extensions and links for additional actions.

Sooner or later you will need some additional user interface elements, either from your core engine, or added by some plugins. It is often problematic to fit these elements on the page without breaking the layout, making the page cluttered and generally sacrificing aesthetics and usability.

That’s why, when designing your HTML and styles, you should keep it in mind and leave room for extending:

• Have a menu of possible actions – for the page and for the whole wiki. Let plugins and other extensions add links to these menus.
• Reserve some space at the top for messages and various notes.
• Have some place (bottom of the page, sidebar, separate view) where you can display additional information: messages, links, icons, buttons, even graphs and applets.
